QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q: I eat a very healthy diet. Do I still have to exercise?
A: “I’d say, unequivocally, yes. Think of working out and eating right like yin and yang. Independently they each have benefits, but when you put them together they’r powerful. For instance, I know many patients who’ve lost weight by dieting, only to quickly plateau. Once these people started using a stationary bike or taking walks, more pounds came off – and stayed off. The yin-yang concept also works when you’re talking about cholesterol. A healthy diet can significantly lower LDL, the “bad” cholesterol. However, it has little effect on raising HDL, the “good” cholesterol. Exercise is the opposite: It doesn’t do much to lower the “bad”, but it’s the key to raising the “good”. I say, bravo for eating healthy! Now find a workout you like and stick with it”.
